SETSUBUN
Every year on March 7th the Japanese celebrate "bean throwing day" where someone with a mask tries to scare the children and they throw beans at them and tell the Oni (Japanese word for monster) to go away. Their super sweet Japanese teacher, Akiko Davis is being the monster for them.

CARROT ISLAND
On President’s day we took a 30 minute ferry ride from Okinawa’s mainland to Tsukenjima, also called carrot island. The island has many fields where farmers grow delicious carrots which are fatter, sweeter, and more reddish than what you buy in the states. We had a nice Japanese driver give us a tour of the island in a golf cart. Visiting this island made me feel like I had gone back in time when we watched the farmers working without all the big machinery and women harvesting seaweed to make nori in the traditional way. The island has less than a 500 residents, most of which speak both Japanese and Okinawan. This island boasts Okinawa’s first light house, and the island was the site of much devastation in the Battle of Okinawa at the end of WWII. We fell in love with the beautiful shoreline full of interesting rocks, brilliant blue water, white sandy beaches, and pretty coral and shells. BLUE SEAL

BASEBALL GAME
Okinawa is the location for spring training for all the Japanese baseball teams, so we got to watch a game! It was pretty slow at first, but got more exciting at the end with a home run and a grand slam. Unfortunately the team we chose to cheer for didn’t win, but it was still a fun experience.
