August 2023--New England Trip

 SPELL HALL

We took our Nathanael to the home of his namesake, Nathanael Greene.
Without Greene, we may never have won the war. He loved to read and taught himself military strategy.

He was raised a Quaker, but left that behind in order to fight. He was quite wealthy, but his simple furnishings were due to his Quaker upbringing. He used personal money and credit to get supplies for the army, which bankrupted him. He ended up giving his house to his brother in order to avoid it being repossessed by debt collectors.

DIANA'S BATHS

Most people come here to swim and cool off in the summer, but since it was cool and rainy, we just enjoyed watching the water rush down the falls.

We loved the garden and the breathtaking view of Lake Winnipesaukee below.

LAKE WINNIPESAUKEE
After watching What About Bob, we couldn't not stop by the lake, although the movie was actually filmed elsewhere.

KANCAMAGUS SCENIC BYWAY AND THE WHITE MOUNTAINS

We loved the misty mountains and the gorgeous views!

AN ANSWER TO PRAYER

After our hike we got a hole in our tire and the kids got a lesson on how to change a tire. There were no auto or tire shops still open in rural Vermont, so we looked again in the morning, but nothing was open on a Sunday.
We went to church and met this man who is a mechanic who replaced our tire with a used one in his shop for free. We're thankful for this kind man who was an answer to our prayers.

JOSEPH SMITH'S BIRTH PLACE

We had a wonderful experience at Joseph Smith's birthplace. It was inspiring to see the monument to him.
Joseph Smith said, "I am like a huge, rough stone rolling down from a high mountain; and the only polishing I get is when some corner gets rubbed off by coming in contact with something else, striking with accelerated force against religious bigotry, priest-craft, lawyer-craft, doctor-craft, lying editors, suborned judges and jurors, and the authority of perjured executives, backed by mobs, blasphemers, licentious and corrupt men and women—all hell knocking off a corner here and a corner there. Thus I will become a smooth and polished shaft in the quiver of the Almighty." I love that this monument is a polished shaft like in the quotation.

COVERED BRIDGES
We loved all the cute covered bridges throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.

MOUNT MANSFIELD

We had a fun hike up Mount Mansfield, the tallest mountain in Vermont.
Cool mushrooms along the trail

The views were gorgeous!

BINGHAM FALLS

We loved the waterfalls, the mountains, the trees, and the greenery throughout Vermont. Not pictured are the maple farm and the scrumptious maple treats we enjoyed.

HARVARD

It was neat to see all the beautiful buildings on this historic campus.

We really enjoyed their glass flower collection. It's amazing how the artists were able to make the glass flowers so realistic looking.

We also liked looking at all the jewels and crystals.

BOSTON TEMPLE
We weren't able to exit in time, but we got to see the Boston temple from the freeway.

ORCHARD HOUSE
It was neat to tour the home of Louisa May Alcott and learn more about her life.

My four little women

The school started by Louisa's dad.
Nathanael Hawthorne's Home near Orchard house.

LEXINGTON AND CONCORD
We visited Minute Man National Historic park in Lexington and Concord where Brooklyn and Audrey earned their Jr Ranger badges.

The bridge where the minute man stood firm and refused to move for the British troops.

“The Concord Hymn” by Ralph Waldo Emerson:

By the rude bridge that arched the flood.
Their flag to April's breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

THE MAYFLOWER REPLICA

It was interesting to tour the ship and think what the voyage would have been like.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

Four years ago Jared spent 6 weeks in Newport, RI for officer training. He fell in love with the town and decided to take us all back to see it.

We spent a fabulous day touring old mansions (the summer “cottages” of Robber Barons like the Vanderbilts).

THE WHARF

We had fun walking around the wharf and trying out some yummy vegan ice cream.
TOPIARY GARDEN

It was fun to find all the LEGO creatures in the garden.
